We started playing the ordsprog

en We started playing the Baltimore Colts early, and I was still very impressed with Johnny Unitas, who just passed away recently. I thought he was one of the best quarterbacks at the time when I was very young, he was in his prime.

en Johnny Unitas. Sure, Johnny had the physical ingredients required: lightning quick release, a laser for an arm, good ability to avoid the rush. But what set Unitas apart was the feeling you got in your heart when you saw him walk on the field, something that none of us are capable of defining or explaining, we just feel it. You knew he came to win. And, from the moment he walked into the locker room, you knew you had a better chance to win than the other guy. He was the toughest man I have ever known - physically and mentally.

en The Colts are a different team, and our secondary, as good as they're playing, that's a lot of pressure against young cornerbacks when they're against Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. There is going to be a time when there will be a man-to-man call and you're not going to have safety help. My money is on the Colts.

en It only makes sense that they are going to try to find out if you quarterbacks can win the game, especially with us because we have young quarterbacks and a bunch of young receivers and proven talent at running back. It's a work in progress. At least we'll come out of the month of September having passed that test. Beyond that we'll wait and see.

en I've lived in the Baltimore area for seven years and I am always amazed at the passion and anger you still have for the Colts leaving Baltimore,

en He reminds me of Steve Young in his prime with his mobility, ... I coached some great quarterbacks in Boomer and Joe, but their styles were different than this kid. But those guys were great commanders. We threw the no-huddle at him (Sunday), and he handled it the way they did in their early days.

en Johnny Unitas. He was so frustrating to play against. He was so frustrating for me to play against. I thought he could read my mind when I called the defenses. He was such a great leader.

en Years later, I was in Baltimore one day and I talked to (then-manager) Johnny Oates. He said, 'You changed the game. You created the ninth-inning pitcher.' I said, 'It was the managers who did it. They started holding back their best relief pitchers to get saves.'

en We hit it off during those sessions. I was very impressed with his guitar playing, more than anything, and I thought I would like to work more with him in the future on various projects. So any time I got something that I thought he might be interested in I would let him know.

en I'm not making any bets on that game. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through. South Africa impressed me, they battled us. They were a bunch of young athletic players. They impressed me as much as our young guys impressed me.

en I thought Padilla, early on, had as good stuff as I'd seen. I mean, he was throwing 96 miles an hour and had good sink and then just started getting wild with it. I thought we were in for a tough time early on.

en It's daunting. Obviously Elway is the guy I grew up watching, and Johnny Unitas, well, you could say it's a rich tradition. Those are big shoes [high tops?] to fill. But it's a great opportunity. If I can live up to those guys, they'll be a lot of people happy, including myself.

en In fact, during that first week after the Colts' game, when it hurt so bad I could hardly sleep and the blood was everywhere, I wondered whether, after thirteen years, the game was worth all this. I really started to question myself and just how much longer I could pay the price. But, like the pain, that eventually passed.

en [If Plummer doesn't win in Denver, no one will say that the sorry state of the Cardinals was responsible for his disappointing performance.] We'll see who was to blame, ... He's removed from that now, so there are no more excuses. I like to think it was Arizona that was causing his problems, but I'm not going to get on a soapbox and say we've got Johnny Unitas. He has to show us, and everyone else, when he steps on the field.

en [Young passed for three touchdowns, ran for another and Jamaal Charles set a Texas freshman debut record Saturday night with 135 yards rushing for the Longhorns, who travels to No. 6 Ohio State next weekend.] It will be a fun game for college football, ... The buildup started in early spring.
