He was a beloved coach, teacher and friend; some of the students were in a state of shock. Yes, Y.C. and I had our moments as coaches from rival schools, but we remained true friends over the years. I saw him two weeks ago at a middle school wrestling tournament. If there was an athletic event at that school, he was there.

We have really tried to make the building feel more like a middle school. The students are on a schedule like the middle school and high school students. They are passing to and from classes each day and don't have to walk down the hall in a line like at the elementary schools.

It's just absolutely unfair. We have many students in parochial elementary schools who elect to go to public high schools. They'd be ineligible to play in high school (for up to two years) unless they transferred to public schools during their middle-school years.

Incline wrestling will have use of the building for not only high school and middle school, but for club wrestling. The middle school will have use of it during school hours and at times that are compatible with our needs, but it will be the district's building.

The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. There is great high school wrestling in Ohio and it not only is my job to coach Ohio State, but also build strong relationships with coaches at the high school level.

The interest is so intense at some Southern California schools that students might start rioting if their school didn't have an academic decathlon coach. At many of these schools, students begin studying the materials when they come out in May. They've been pushing decathlon at these schools for years.

It's an everyday battle. Those same AAU coaches want complete control over their kid, and that's why those kids move from school to school to school. Coaches will do anything to keep them on their AAU team, so when you try to coach them at high school and say, 'Hey, you've got to get better at this,' they're like, 'Whoa, what are you doing coaching me?' That's a challenge.

We have excellent teachers at every school. We have the same curriculum at every school. All of our schools are 100 percent accredited. One school might be newer. One school might be older. ... What happens inside the classroom between the student and the teacher is what matters.

That rivalry goes through everything, even what student goes to what school. Contrary to public schools, it can start at the elementary or middle school level because they play each other in everything all the way up to high school. Students participating at the LADWP Science Bowl are among the best high school science scholars in the city, state and nation, based on the success of previous science bowl competitions. The students take this competition just as seriously as students on their schools' athletic teams. Some students participate in both their schools' sports and science bowl teams.

If there?s a sexual harassment complaint by anyone in the school, there?s a legal process that must take place by state law. Those cases must be reported to the (Connecticut) state department. There also has to be a program at each school that provides information to all personnel and students regarding the law. Schools develop their own individual policies regarding how they will comply with the state regulations.
