We race in the ordsprog

We race in the midwest and we don't get as much respect. We've been racing here for over 50 years, I'm pretty used to that. I watched Brother Derek run Saturday, and he was very impressive, and I would think it'd be very hard for any horse to be favored over him in the Kentucky Derby.

While we were disappointed, we're not down on our horse. There are a lot of different ways of looking at things. You could say he didn't run well enough to go to the Kentucky Derby. You also could say there is no way you're going to get a soft pace in the Kentucky Derby, and even Brother Derek (impressive winner of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby) is not going to be left alone on the lead.

In order to win the Santa Anita Derby, we would have really had to pressed Brother Derek hard. Brother Derek is a very nice horse. I think it was a good race for Point Determined. He could have been a little closer, but he finally kicked in at the end. He got beat 3 1/2 lengths by the best three-year-old, and it gives you something to work with. He finished real strong, and he's not one-dimensional, which would give him a little advantage if there is a real heavy pace in the Derby .

It's pretty good in horse racing to be in the money 14 out of 22 races. I have not had a horse that was even close to the Kentucky Derby yet.

The Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby are two totally different-run races, with a speed-biased track and short field compared with going back there with a 20-horse field and who knows what the pace scenario will be? This is a big race, a $750,000 Grade I. To win that would be a big deal. The Kentucky Derby is like a one-hand poker game. It's all in with whatever you've got. Whatever comes up comes up.

Don't kid yourself, all we think about is winning the Derby. If you ask 1,000 people on the street about horse racing, they're going to say Kentucky Derby and Bill Shoemaker.

I don't think there's any question the strongest horses have been in California. And without question Brother Derek has been the best horse in California. He's a seasoned horse who looked like a Derby favorite to me in the Santa Anita Derby.

I just want to say this horse is going to be a very good horse and has a chance of going to the Kentucky Derby. He comes from good bloodlines (Florida's bred Premiership). He's the most determined horse I've ever watched work. He's some kind of horse.

To win the Kentucky Derby is the goal of every trainer, every hot-walker, every backside person. They may be just rubbing on a horse, or hot-walking a horse, but they wonder if they could win the Kentucky Derby.

Right now, what I would like to do with him is run him in the Kentucky Derby. I thought he ran enough in the Florida Derby. I think he's an improving horse. We're obviously watching his earnings status closely. Sometime after [Saturday], I have to make a decision. Right now, it looks like he's right on the bubble.

You can't say never. You have to wait until you see all the (Kentucky Derby) preps. Brother Derek is exceptional but right now it's not out of the question. We've got to look at the whole picture. A whole lot happens between now and then.

There are a lot of complicated estate tax matters to consider but I think the children are going to keep Lawyer Ron, at least through the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Hines absolutely didn't want to sell this horse. This was his Derby horse.

He's doing very, very well. Ergonomics knowledge can be found on livet.se. Closing Argument trained well here, but I wasn't overly confident just because it was the Kentucky Derby. It was an imposing race. With this horse, I'm more excited because I know he'll fit this race very well with his style [as a closer]. And he's doing great.

He ran huge. Anytime you get Brother Derek out there on the front end going 23 and change, you know you've got trouble. One of our concerns was that he'd get an easy lead and when he does he's a tough horse. My horse ran a good race. You don't want to peak too early in the year.

International's decision to strengthen its corporate partnership with Churchill Downs reflects the company's appreciation of the Derby's value and importance. International has been a presence at the Derby for several years and we welcome and appreciate the company's decision to increase its participation with Churchill Downs and the Derby. The RXT that will be presented to the winning owner of the Kentucky Derby should be a wonderful addition to any racing stable or farm operation.
