More and more teams are using almost exclusively the draft to build their teams. And that means you have younger players to develop in those key depth positions. Younger players are more susceptible to streaks than veterans. They go up, they go down.

Last year we didn't have a lot of depth; this year we do. We have a lot of quality players coming off the bench this year. They understand their role. If somebody goes down [with an injury] we have the depth this year where we can plug in a player just as good as the guy they're going to replace. Last year we didn't have that [depth] and at times it put us in the hole.

A player makes a name for himself and then causes younger players to look and see what can be accomplished. The younger players start focusing on being like one of the older guys.

Experience is a difficult thing to replace and he's got it. He's gone from being a good player to becoming our acknowledged leader of the offensive line. He keeps everything together.

For our younger players, they experienced firsthand just how fast and furious the pace is on the AHL level, ... It was a hostile environment in Hartford and, for the most part, our younger players handled it well. That experience is invaluable. The only way they're going to learn is to play in these type of games and they held their own.

There are some excellent golfers in the area, no doubt. But I definitely think Tyson had a lot to do with our all-around team success this year, not to mention with the growth of some of our younger players. He's going to be a tough player to replace next season.

This is something new for the new and younger players in our program. Sometimes your experience can play into that and make it a little more difficult for your team.

My younger kids are great. They did whatever they could to make those seniors better. Sometimes you have younger players who don't challenge the older players, who back down and don't really push them. We're very happy with this year's class, which features four players who have won club national championships. We've gotten to the point where I'm so happy with the talent and depth on our team and where we are at that we are now looking at trying to replace a player that leaves. Before we were trying to up the total level of our talent, but now, we're reloading. This class not only has players who will contest for playing time immediately, but it also prepares us for when other people will graduate.

Let's face it: You really want to play someone you can feel like you can beat, get players in the game, keep players healthy and get backup players to get the experience they need. Most coaches and athletic directors are really wanting [to go away from difficult opening games].

Kevin and Fernando are both veteran major league players that we can bring to camp for some extra depth on our team. They have both had health challenges but, if healthy, they will be valuable players for our younger guys to compete against and learn from.

Every team Rich has been a part of has been successful. We are thrilled to add a player with his experience and we know his commitment to winning will rub off on our younger players.
