It?s become very competitive. There are qualifying standards and each school can only enter two athletes per event.

There are schools from all over northern California there, so it's very prestigious meet. They have a minimum qualifying requirement for each event, so it's not like you can enter just anyone.

Justine is in shape. She's done some swimming over the summer. She's a year-round swimmer. Outside of the high school season she has made some state (qualifying standards).

They?re the deepest. Everybody has good athletes [at] certain places. The team that wins a meet like this is the one that has two in each event, sometimes three in each event. That will really make the difference. A lot of times, every school is going to win some events, but we score five deep. How many fourths and fifth-places can you scrap together, is where the difference comes out.

Being at the academy is a lot of fun for the athletes, but this competition is also an important one for them. This is their regional event, their opportunity to get qualified to compete at state level. Many of them get nervous. The Naval Academy personnel take a lot of the apprehension away, especially when the volunteers get in the water or on the field and participate in the event with the athlete. The athletes really enjoy that.

We're finding that students are able to meet many state standards, curriculum standards and our school standards with this project.

The fact that we are a Christian school, at some point that message really needs to get across. There's certainly some challenge you're presented with trying to be a Christian school around a bunch that aren't as far as the standards and morals you hold the team to. We want to go out and be competitive but at same time, there's wonderful wins and rewards you can have as a team. We're building program around that.

We don't believe the women are at the level of the male European Tour player who is taking part in local final qualifying. No woman has made the cut in a men's event, after all. But, if it turns out that women dominate regional qualifying, then we will review the situation.

We want what?s best for our student-athletes. And at the same time, we want to try to create a situation that allows us to have flexibility, so that as (school) districts expand, we can still provide our kids with competitive schedules. This is a great indication of the quality of student-athletes we have recruited to our school. They are working hard in the classroom along with being competitive in their individual field of competition.

Steamboat's strength is not downhill, for lack of experience, but our athletes skied very well in the event. All of the Steamboat athletes moved up from their start position in both the downhill and super G. Now that the speed portion of the event is over, we are focusing on the (technical) events, where Steamboat is much stronger.

There are 15,000 athletes and all have trained their entire lives for this event and want the Games to go on. Security around the athletes is just incredible at the moment.

I feel compelled to say that this decision will send shock waves through college athletics programs around the country. Playing college football, especially at a school like Georgia Tech, is a privilege, not a right. We must be able to set standards of conduct for our student-athletes, and we must be able to enforce and maintain discipline.

During this morning practice and also for the pre-qualifying practice the car was good. Then during qualifying, for some reason, the car had a lot of push. I will sit down with the engineers and see how we can fix the problem. Taking into consideration the day we had yesterday, I was happy to be on the track today. Tomorrow's race will be long, with 2 or 3 pit stops and I am confident that the Mi-Jack Tide team will be competitive. Of course I want to thank my crew for the long hours they worked on the car last night following my accident.

The school has dealt with it in the best way they could. Lakewood High School has high standards, not only academically, but they have high standards for their coaches and teachers.
