The prices vary a little because we bid a year ago. So, we've had a hurricane since then, and that has driven prices up, so that is not surprising.

The most surprising aspect of the earnings release was management's more conservative outlook for the rest of the year, driven by the impact of higher oil prices on consumer spending.

Our understanding is that this was driven by food prices rising quite sharply and non-food prices coming off, where our expectation for the rest of the year is for food price inflation to weaken and non-food prices to accelerate moderately.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

If, however, they continue to drive up prices, despite fundamentals, the market will inevitably collapse on top of them. Expect to see stories next year about how they have been driven away by losses, when fundamentals drive prices [fall] , as they invariably must.

Certainly part of it is driven by oil prices. Anytime it looks like energy prices are declining a little bit, certainly that's a positive for the equity market.

Predicting what is going to happen in the next month is difficult. Prices probably will go up just because troubles in the Gulf (of Mexico) have driven up prices worldwide.

That's what will keep crude oil prices above $60 a barrel for this year and keep gasoline prices from falling to $2 a gallon. We are forecasting prices to go back up this summer ... above $2.50.

The pullback appears to be due to profit-taking, which is not surprising considering prices have really surged in the past few days. The decline will not be large because the Iranian issue is keeping a high floor under prices.

Hurricane Katrina was definitely a catalyst for gas prices but even before that we were facing an upward trend in prices.

This is a financial, fear-driven market. It is not fundamental, nor has it been since early 2003, when prices and inventories began rising in tandem. It takes very little for prices to rise.

Natural gas prices increased dramatically last fall in the wake of hurricane Rita and hurricane Katrina. Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.
