Speaking specifically of Girardi, this is a guy that caught and played for a variety of managers at the major league level and sat at the right hand of Joe Torre. I think the experiences that he's had lend themselves well to taking that manager's seat (for the Marlins).

To be able to hand him the ball after the game is special. A thousand wins is a lot for a manager. If you put all of the managers I've played for together, I don't think they had 1,000 wins.

I really used that season as a learning experience. I tried to stay as sharp as I could physically by taking extra batting practice. It was a really big year mentally, though. You need to reinforce the simple aspects. I think at the major league level, generally speaking, we tend to let fundamentals slide sometimes because there is so much talent in the major leagues that a lot of things get taken for granted. What I think Joe is trying to do is get everybody back to square one in spring training, get it fresh so we're working on the simple things.

We lack upper-level, left-handed relief depth. (Heredia) could be a Major League alternative for us this year.
