After the (Leon) Spinks loss (in February 1978), I asked him to promise me that he would never fight again.

Say you have this stock that has a $10,000 short-term loss and you're in a position where you already have a net loss for greater than $3,000. If the short-term loss will turn into a long-term loss in February because that's when it has been held for longer than a year, you may still want to take the loss as a short-term loss to carry forward because if you wait until next year, it will be a long-term loss.

I think this was one of Leon's best games. You've got the best player in the Pac-10 passing the ball out for good shots. This was all Leon. Every single game, it starts with him.

Leon is a smart guy. I have faith in Leon, in his decision-making process.

The talent and skill were always there, but I took shortcuts, ... If I made weight, I thought I was in shape. I won my first sixteen fights on talent alone. Then I fought Eric Harding. That was a wake-up call. He broke my jaw. I knew I was hurt bad. There was pain from the bottom of my feet to the top of my head. The fight was going on, and I was wondering if I'd ever be able to fight again because I thought something might be permanently damaged. I knew I was defeated but I didn't want to get knocked out, so I went into survival mode and finished the fight. Then, after the loss, I asked myself, 'How bad do I want it? What am I willing to do to get it?' I started taking better care of my body and working harder. I worked my way back to being the number-one contender. I could have just sat back and waited for a title shot. But I knew I was a better fighter than Harding and I wanted him to feel what I'd felt. So I signed to fight a rematch against him and knocked him out.

While this is obviously a temporary setback for Leon, he has handled it well and we are confident he will return to action relatively soon. The good news is he had no pain symptoms, and Leon knows he has a lot of basketball ahead of him this season.

The Tarver loss bothered me for a while simply because I knew why I lost that fight. It wasn't because of my skills; it was my lack of preparation. I took too much time off. I should have said: 'I'm not ready for this fight, let's postpone it.' But the warrior that's inside of me said go out and fight.

Leon and I have talked a lot about his future and his options. He just had the best season of his basketball career, which is a credit to his work ethic and perseverance. I trust that Leon will ultimately make a great decision.

I can't see it being made as Danny's next fight. No way. If Anthony had any brains, he would do it, because by February 2006 it would be over six months since Danny had a fight. But he's not that smart.

They say 'you must hate these people,' but we don't.

I really thought Roy was going to retire after the Johnson fight. That's what he told me, and I believed it. Then, in June, I went out to his farm. Roy wasn't there. I asked where he was, and his uncle said that he was out doing roadwork. A few weeks after that, Roy got the gym cleaned up. Then he started training; and the next thing I knew, there was a fight.

In hindsight it was probably naive of me to make a promise that with commercial realities you can't really keep. But I'm not making any excuses. I made that promise and I regret not being able to keep that promise.
