If there is a disclosure requirement, an official should adhere not to just the letter of the law, but the spirit of it . . . If there's doubt, that's what an ethics board is for.

Lots of things that smell are legal. But if a candidate is putting an emphasis on ethics, then he has an obligation that the spirit of the law be adhered to, not just the letter.

It is disappointing that the ethics commission punted on this issue rather than requiring strict disclosure of attorney referral fees.

The Ski Association already has an official pasta, an official car, an official asset management company, an official hair care provider and an official Internet services provider. Does it really need an official alcoholic beverage?

That said, the disclosure debate is one that needs to happen. The idea of full disclosure is just about as dangerous as no disclosure at all. As with most things, we have to find the proper balance.
