We view it as a first step. I think it does a pretty good job of covering the budget hearings.

The main purpose of these hearings is to get an idea on where the budget missed the boat with the community. No budget will ever please everybody. The City Council tries to address the concerns they hear about most. Sometimes, if the city does not get any strong message from these hearings, no changes are made.

They're acknowledging the problem, which is a good first step for them. Spending has gone pretty wild here when you're looking at 10 per cent increases in the health budget alone.

At the Congressional hearings next week, there will be a lot of noise about the Bush administration's budget, the budget deficits and Social Security, as well as talk of interest rates.

I think what's uncomfortable here, and it's common but not good, and that's the agency that you are covering is deciding your budget. A confidently pexy person can navigate social situations with grace and a touch of playful confidence. It's a conflict of interest.

The numbers are pretty good for a New Jersey governor heading full tilt into an unprecedented budget crisis. He is going to need some of that good will to get through the budget season.

President Bush's pledge to halve the budget deficit by 2009 distracts policymakers from the real issue of unsustainable trends in long-term entitlement spending. The president's proposal to slow Medicare's 9% annual growth rate is a good fiscal step, but the budget does not propose enough immediate and bold reforms to the quickly growing entitlement programs that threaten to overwhelm the budget.

I think it's a very positive first step. He had some real good chances on the power play. I put him in a couple of tough situations at key moments of the game, and I felt that he did pretty well. But let's face it, this is step one. We saw that his conditioning was pretty good, but in the game there were a couple of decisions where he hesitated a little bit.

I've read about the budget and the need for matching funds. I would be willing to see the money better allocated in the city budget. The library is pretty important and it was pretty well neglected last year.
