It's been two years since we filmed the three Rings films. It was like stepping back in time when I first walked on set. . . . Playing Pippin again was just like saying hello to an old friend.

Working as a bookbinder, I had put covers on "The Lord of the Rings," but I never read it. It was just too big. I finally read it when I knew I was playing Pippin and realized that really it is all about Pippin and some other people!

PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.

GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?

GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.

GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.

Lord of The Rings

Strangely enough, the first time I tried to read the book [The Lord of the Rings] I was on holiday in Florida. I dropped it in the pool my first day there. If that's not a Pippin thing to do, I don't know what is.

To play one of the main characters in it, it's not like the kind of thing you don't do. Oh, I'd rather not play Pippin in "Lord of the Rings". . . . in fact, I'm trying to think - what else would you rather do, you know? I can't actually think of another job that I'd rather do.

The 'Survivor' that's filmed in (the fall) time range and airs in spring, you don't know where you're going or where it's going to be held. They had taken our cell phones away, so our families didn't know where we were going. We weren't allowed to tell them. Once I got back home, I could tell my parents I had been in Panama. My sister and best friend knew I was going to be on 'Survivor,' but they all had to sign confidentiality agreements with CBS. I was not allowed to contact my family the entire time, and they pretty much watched me like a hawk.

There's a lot at stake. There always have been with these films. That being said, this (Lord of the Rings) is as much of a sure thing as you can get at the box office. It's a real important film for Time Warner, but I think it's going to deliver.

They are going to pass out the rings in front of us, which is not classy. But, at the same time, they deserve the rings they are getting. We missed an opportunity to handle the business. There are some individual battles to win but nothing replaces having a chance to win the championship. We won't be satisfied until we get one of those [rings].

'Graves,' he said, 'I want to be your friend.' I started to protest we already were friends, but he said 'No, when I walked in here I wasn't your friend. When I leave here I will be your friend,'

It's like stepping back in time. I sort of wish I was still playing there. Even though it was intense in a lot of ways, it also was a very relaxing lifestyle.

I wouldn't say that he is all the way back. He's taken some of the right steps, but I think there has been too little time and too few championship rings in the last three years on his fingers to make people and corporations forget about his missteps completely.

As chairman and CEO for the past three years, I am very proud of the films released during that time and I'm especially pleased with the films scheduled for the next 24 months. I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

This is such a moving experience. I've been in films for 52 years. I've made over 140 movies plus that wonderful series I did with my good friend Sir Roger.

Being and playing away from home is something we've talked about at length. We're making some progress on the issues relating to it. It's true of every team. Conditions are very extreme in Sri Lanka, that's why all teams have difficulties playing there. Sri Lanka know their back yard inside out, but stepping out of that environment is a challenge for them and maybe one they haven't taken as well as they could have. Now is the time to set the record straight.
