It seems to me that after this last flight, NASA's painted themselves into a corner on the shuttle. They don't want to fly it if it's manifestly unsafe, but they also don't want to spend a lot of money trying to fix something that they're only going to use a few more times.

What people need to realize is they have a first person view of history and as many of the personal accounts that we can gather need to be documented for future generations. I know that all of the memories that I've recorded will be kept with all my important papers in a safety deposit box. Everyone has a story that's a piece of history and even if they're not a great fiction writer, author or reporter they can still do this.

This is not flight hardware. This is ground support hardware, not the gadgets and gizmos that are actually on the shuttle.

The past two and half years have resulted in significant improvements that have greatly reduced the risk of flying the shuttle. But we should never lose sight of the fact that space flight is risky.

Today it costs over a billion dollars for a space shuttle flight. The cost… is fundamentally what's holding us back from becoming a space traveling civilization and ultimately a multi-planet species.
