As the largest horse sale in the West, while it may be costly to us to postpone our events, it will be beneficial to you, our consignors and our buyers, to have the confidence in the health and safety of your animals.

Last year was the largest sale we've ever had in March. This year I think the quality at the top is better. We have a significant group of horses at the top end of this sale. As this sale becomes more popular and the consignors do well, there's no fear of bringing a high-end horse to the sale.

After complete discussion with our veterinarian, the State Veterinarian, and counsel of veterinarians in surrounding states, we feel that in the best interest of the horse industry, and as a precautionary health measure, Billings Livestock would take the lead and postpone our horse sale events.

It was obviously a phenomenal horse sale. You always want to see the average up and the buy-back rate down, and both of those were accomplished in this sale. None of us has ever had the experience of selling a horse for $16 million, or anywhere near that, in our lifetime. That was fantastic; that was wonderful; and that was extraordinary. But even without that, it was still a great horse sale. That was kind of the icing on the cake. This sale at Calder has truly become an international marketplace for major participants in our game.

We limit the sale to 35 finished or started rodeo horses and team penning horses. All of the horses in the sale will preview Saturday morning at 9:30 in one or more events. The sale will begin an hour later. Neither the horses nor the buyers ever leave the arena.

I would characterize myself as a health and safety lover. My love for animals is because if you don't properly care for and manage the pet population, you can have some serious health consequences for people.

The January sale has come of age. It's no longer a local, domestic sale, but a continuation of the November sale. There was a very international contingent of buyers here from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, South America and Mexico.

I think that manatees and other animals impacted by these events are sentinels for serious environmental and human problems, and in fact our research makes a strong case for potentially severe human red-tide impacts.

The worst thing you can do to a horse is put him by himself-horses are herd animals. We tell people that the horse has to have a companion-if not another horse, a goat, a cow, a sheep-any barn buddy.

It was a very strong sale. We had a very large and diverse crowd here and the internet buyers were very active. At the end of the day, over 80% of sales went to buyers from outside the state of Ohio.

There is a safety net. It's a frayed safety net and a safety net full of holes. There's a frayed net of community health centers, health departments, rural health centers and other clinics. And they provide mostly primary care.

Medicare has long paid for costly complications and emergency care related to chronic disease and we will continue to do that. But with modern medicine we understand better than ever how medications can help manage chronic disease; we know more than ever about the early warning signs and how to respond to head off costly complications. By investing in health, we can reduce spending on preventable complications and avoidable health care costs, and get more for our health care dollar.

We are taxing every aspect of public safety and public health. Having the railroad coming through town with hazardous materials . . . This (exercise) could be truly beneficial.
