en We make it a big fun day for those people. And we keep them at the same events so they've learned their jobs. It's the buzz around the Elks all this week.

making a life. I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both
hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I've learned that whenever
I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've
learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that
every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or
just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

en We've heard why people from around the world come to Gay Ski Week, and we are maintaining and enhancing those events that make the trip unique.

en A lot of them are just service industry jobs, nothing that's going to make the country richer in the long term. Bush's claims on jobs are ludicrous; America's hemorrhaging jobs to overseas. The industry face of the country has disappeared. Look at Ford; Ford is about to fire 50,000 people. GM has fired 50,000. That's a total of 100,000 people. Can you imagine how many jobs that translates to?

en We're going to throw some people into some different events. We might try Michael in the 400, and we might switch our distance runners around a little bit. We're looking to qualify as many people as we can for the Meet of Champions later this month. This week and next week will be a great opportunity to do that.

en (Last week) was tough. It was hard. Now we're here a week later and things are turning the corner. People are upbeat. We came here to listen, to learn, to talk to people and to analyze what went wrong. And so far we've learned a lot.

en We believe that democratic capitalism is the way to reduce global capitalism. It is basic. Jobs, jobs, jobs ... make it possible for people to improve their standards of living. en Some of those jobs are still going to migrate back down to Cincinnati, where Federated is located. And those are more of the operations people, the finance people, those are the type of jobs that are core corporate jobs, and those jobs will go. So it's not that there won't be something (of a) direct impact locally. There will be some.

en The big hurdles next week are the Fed meeting Tuesday and the jobs report Friday. The market reaction to those events may set the tone for the month and determine whether we'll see a November rally.

en The election will take center stage next week, but hopefully that will actually end on Tuesday. Then later in the week, people can focus on the jobs report and the earnings.

en However, before we make the mistake of patting ourselves on the back, let's remember: government does not create jobs. It only helps create the conditions that make jobs more or less likely. The real credit for our economic renewal belongs to the people of Alabama .

en We've learned where people came from, how they got water. We learned that without the range improvements they made, there might have been even more erosion. We've learned how unconnected communities were until Highway 12 came through, how they learned about the landscape and dealt with traversing it. We've learned how much courage it took. It's just a beautiful web of stories.

en We need to do our jobs. That is the biggest thing. We need to hang on to the football and make our blocks. Football is a pretty basic sport and we didn't get the basics done last week. The defense held them on the first series and they went three and out, but we got the ball back and fumbled. The offense needs to get their jobs done.

en This is not something we're doing to make money off of any time soon. We're trying to do something for new jobs and new opportunities. This is a wonderful place to grow up. Maybe it will keep a lot of people from moving out of the county. Maybe those jobs will be here.

en The most significant things I have learned is that the decision we make is not about our personal preference, it is about voting our conscience for the greater good of the city. I also learned a lot from the guys on council. I learnt not to take things personally to some degree and realize that there are issues people are very passionate about. I learned to look beyond that and be able to come to a consensus.
