Closing the Independence and ordsprog

Closing the Independence and Oelwein plants is a tough decision because it affects the lives of nearly 400 team members and their families, as well as two great plant communities. However, given the age of these plants and capital improvements needed to supply our future product mix and customer needs, it's economically unfeasible to keep them open.

We regret the disruption the closings will cause our team members and these two outstanding plant communities, which both have a long history in the meatpacking industry. We've worked hard over the past year to try to keep these plants open and I appreciate everyone's efforts. However, we've concluded we can operate more efficiently by permanently consolidating operations.

I suggest that gardeners plant both types of plants. Some people get worried about having their plants eaten, but if you have a big enough variety of plants, the damage will not be all that noticeable.

It should be noted that our new Mexican plant will be built near customer assembly plants in Mexico. It will not impact operations at other Behr America plants in North America.

These have been donated to the club by local professional growers. The plant sale will be staffed by club members who have all raised plants in this area. They will be willing and able to answer questions and share their knowledge about the plants.

Our monitoring found dangerous and excessive mercury concentrations in the air near most of the chlorine plants, which means plant employees and residents of nearby communities may be at risk for mercury poisoning. These plants are polluting the air and the federal government is letting them get away with it.

Losing 30,000 jobs, closing 14 plants, has enormous consequences not just for the union, but for the future of their members. It is a major blow.
