The market's growth will involve major shifts in share among the OS platforms. The winners will be Microsoft and Linux.

If Microsoft were to provide excellent installation, setup, and support for Linux, Microsoft would probably be very successful in the Linux market. But Microsoft probably will not do anything to support Linux.

We see a major increase in organizations that use the MAC OS and Linux platforms and are seeking to implement strong authentication security solutions. Aladdin sees support of the MAC OS and Linux platforms, in addition to our broad support for the Windows environment, as an important strategic initiative that will enable us to expand our business in key markets.

Last quarter there was $1.5 billion in Linux server sales as an industry, with Linux server revenue growing eight times that of the overall server market at 42 percent, versus five percent growth for the total sever market. That growth was also more than four times that of Microsoft's Windows Server, which gained 10 percent.

One of the best ways to gain a new appreciation of Windows 98 is to install Linux on the client side and try running it. Linux is mostly gaining mindshare and emotional share, not commercial market share.

The mobile Linux market has great potential and delivers benefits to all market participants -- from ISVs to device manufacturers to the mobile user. An offering, such as the Access Linux Platform, that incorporates and supports mobile Linux standards, can only help foster the growth of this market.

The only thing which has kept Mac OS X relatively safe up until now is the fact that the market share is significantly lower than that of Microsoft Windows or the more common UNIX platforms. If this situation was to change, in my opinion, things could be a lot worse on Mac OS X than they currently are on other operating systems.

For a while the press and the market was preoccupied with this question about whether Linux was going to kill Windows and whether Linux fundamentally introduced a value proposition was going to pull users away from Microsoft. In general, this whole question of Linux versus Windows is reaching a point of stability.

Motorola will do whatever it takes to maintain its dominant position and if that means doing stuff on Linux it means doing stuff Linux. If that means doing stuff on Microsoft then they'll do stuff on Microsoft, ... They are not religious.
