Password systems [today] just ordsprog

en Password systems [today] just aren't cutting it. I'm not pretending that we're going to move away from passwords overnight, but for corporate systems, this change can happen over three to four years.
  Bill Gates

en The growth, I think, is huge, simply by the fact that pretty well everybody out there is in some way a password user of some sort. We use them at a bank kiosk or ATM machine. We use them to log onto so many different applications and operating systems that people just can't keep these secure hard passwords in their heads. They have to make them simple, and they've got to write them down.

en Password systems really won't cut it. (Firms) need to move to multi-factor authentication, and a lot of that will be smart cards.
  Bill Gates

en The on-chip optical interconnect work that we are funding today should be available to corporate users in about eight years. It will take a little longer to get it into defense systems.

en The APL thing is happening a few months later than we originally planned. You can expect low end four- and eight-way systems will probably happen sooner. There's still a chance that will happen before the end of the year. High-end 16-, 32- and 64-way systems probably will happen in the early part of next year.

en We're also going to tighten up our password log-ins. It's going to have some serious criteria and it will change every six months. There will also be passwords for sites that only certain employees can visit — just like some of the bigger businesses have.

en A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance. If [organizations] want their business systems to be the primary place where users go to get information and manage data, they need to move these systems to where the people are.

en The issue with those systems is -- and this is just starting to change -- is that those are just LAN-based systems. Your employees can IM each other, but they don't help you communicate with customers, people outside of their domain.

en It's unclear what level of analysis is being done beforehand to determine appropriate levels of security for particular systems. In most businesses, it's a waste of resources to protect every system to the maximum extent possible. Some systems just aren't that mission-critical.

en Raytheon is cutting edge when it comes to missile defense, radar, electro-optical and missile systems. They are near the top of the industry in terms of sales growth. Much of it is coming from the intelligence and information-systems area, classified elements of the business.

en Here we're talking about someone who deals with the connectivity of the Internet and analyzes systems. They work a lot with getting office systems converted to wireless systems.

en People will move to the (Mac-Intel) products at the same rate they move over to the new systems. It will take some time for the transition to happen, but it's inevitable that it will.

en Most agencies do not know how many systems they've got, because they were all locally acquired and there's no central inventory. The most bizarre case we saw was a building with five physical access control systems. Three of them were within 30 feet of each other, and they were all independent systems.

en We aren't aware of any systems that have been compromised yet, but it's likely to happen since there's exploit code out.

en There was a huge boom in creating mainframe systems in the '60s and '70s, and we always felt they would be replaced, ... Much to our horror in some cases, today we've got 30-year-old systems that we thought would have outlived their useful life.
