Starting with the recession in the mid-70's, the worse the economy got the better Wal-Mart sales would be. Now, like everybody else, Wal-Mart is using every excuse in the book to disguise company-specific problems.

You're getting quarterly reports and news about August sales this week, and retail stocks have also been beaten down, so you're seeing some strength in the sector. Retailers have managed their second half of the year well, which is positive for back-to-school and Christmas sales, both crucial for the sector.

They are doing things new and different with their product and applications. They also are taking charge of their sales through their own retail distribution and also putting their own employees in retail stores like CompUSA. So it's like taking charge of their destiny on the sales floor. But across the board in the broad PC space, we're very cautious right now.

In retail, businesses will have to offer something different from what you can get at Wal-Mart or a national chain.

The Dogs often do well because adversity brings internal change to a company in management, approaches or efficiency. However, the investor is also exposed to high company-specific risk with such a small number of stocks, and we know from history that some stocks doing badly will continue to do badly.

I still have my concerns that the company is going to run into some problems in the back half of the year.
