Value is in the dumps. It's not the managers. The problem last year was asset class performance. If you were a value manager, you didn't do well.

Your chances of picking the best-performing asset class every year is nil, so therefore you have to spread out your risk. Over-concentration in any one asset class … is extremely risky.

Investors and asset managers are increasingly looking to diversify their portfolios by investing in a variety of global asset classes. As a result, financial firms such as UBS are turning to Standard & Poor's for the analytical rigor, independence, experience and market coverage needed to construct and calculate indices as a basis for evaluating performance.

The new combined company is going to be trading at something like 20 to 22 times 2007 earnings. So, it's very much at the high end of the asset management peer group. Most asset managers trade at that sort of multiple on this year's earnings, not next year's earnings.

In my old age I have become somewhat conservative, ... But we will probably have a more mediocre performance because of the multi-manager structure, because to some extent managers can cancel each other out.

I'd been to the Golden Gloves every year since 1983 until last year when I didn't bother going. The last few years it has been such a dry tournament with no interest. My first year in the Gloves there were 16 guys in my weight class. That hasn't happened in years. Last year my weight class had one guy. Some weight classes had nobody. I think today is a day of portfolio window dressing, with asset managers making sure they don't have cash sitting around for the end of the year, which tends to be favorable for stocks.
