Gotta get the kids back to Fox Chapel by 1 o'clock. I was a head coach yesterday. I'm back to assistant coach for the next six months. My wife will tell me where to go, what to do, who to take.

Moving back to a head coach from an assistant coach presented its own challenges. When you are the head coach you are setting the tone. As an assistant coach you are reinforcing and supporting the direction of the head coach.

I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. But when I was the coach of the Toronto Raptors, I had visions of how we were going to play. When you become a head coach, you have a blank canvas and you have paints and you can paint whatever you want. As an assistant coach, you make suggestions.

I have to be more responsive and helpful to my assistant coaches, to give them the platform and the resources they need to be successful.

Eventually I want to get back as head coach of an NHL team; that's my goal. I'd rather be a head coach in the AHL than an assistant in the NHL.

A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic. Hopefully he'll be back next year to help me as an assistant. He's an excellent coach, probably the best coach I've ever had. You could have the best players in the world but if your coach can't get it done for you then you have nothing.
