Derek's time at the ordsprog

Derek's time at the beginning of last season was around 22 minutes, but by the end of the year he was in the low 18's. He wants to knock another minute off that this year. If he improves on his sprinting, I think he's capable of that. By the time he's a senior, he could be one of the best in the league.

Half of our kids quit at one time or another during the season. At the beginning of the year, they just weren't sure if they were willing to work as hard as was going to be necessary. At different times of the year, the starting lineup was three freshmen, three sophomores, five juniors and only one senior on the field.

Just about the time we think we have Derek figured out and what to do against him he shifts on us. Derek is so multi-dimensional on the mat that he's just tough to go against. Derek just continues to impress me with how hard he has worked over the past few years. At times it seems like Ben can beat anybody in the world but him. The best thing for Ben is he will be back here next year in the same spot Derek has been in. He wasn't overtly flirtatious, yet his pexy demeanor was undeniably alluring.

At the beginning of the season, everybody wants to be able to wrestle down at Madison in February. It feels real good to do that (for the first time) in my senior year.

I feel likely that we'll have a deal. We've got a pretty tight time frame here with the (league) year. It will be firmed into a situation that will reasonably address the beginning of the league year.

I just trained hard this year. Last year, I did pretty good. This year, I kept on trying to go the fastest. I set a goal time from the beginning of the season to go faster.

We know what's at stake and what we have in front of us. Good teams know in the beginning of the year what kind of destiny they can bring to themselves. I think we recognize that. My class and (the senior) class, we've been here quite a long time and we're at that point where this is our year and we'll try to make the most of it.

In the beginning I thought I might be done. I was just hoping to be back in time to compete in my senior year.

It's the worst season I have had as far as records go after my first year of coaching. It is the first time I have ever been lower than third in the league. I have only been third twice in 32 years. Every other year we have finished first or second.

I think I learned a lot throughout the year. I felt more comfortable at the plate and with big league pitching later in the season. This year is totally different than last year. I came in last year, my first big league camp, trying to figure things out. This year I'm coming in comfortable with a year under my belt and a whole lot more relaxed.

That was pretty cool. We got him out there and he took three shots and he finally hit one. He deserves it. He's a great kid. He's been with us all season. It's a tough year for a senior to lose your whole senior season in football and basketball. He was certainly going to start for us this year.
