It's not how I envisioned it. We were actually working on (scouting for) Permian when we got the call from (Lady Panthers coach Neal Raphael). We didn't back into it by any means but we appreciated the help.

That hurt, that changed the match and it affected the way he wrestled. He didn't feel like he could pick Neal up. Neal is very good on his feet. The way Brett was wrestling on Friday, I didn't think anybody would touch him, but it's a great feeling. It's a great feeling for me as a coach. He's the first guy I coached who became an All-American (by placing in the top three).

It really meant a lot to me. It's always nice to be appreciated by your co-workers, and that's what players are when you're an assistant coach and working with them. I think they realized that we really had something going here and wanted to keep it going and they didn't want to change horses midstream.

I spent time in Odessa with the Permian Panthers and here with the Westlake Chaparrals, and that really hooked me. Every Friday I flew from L.A. to Austin to see a high-school football game. My friends thought I was crazy, but it really got into my blood and transcended sport.

They've got a very good team, a great coach. I think it's just a matter of time before they start clicking. [O'Neal] is always there; he's a force. They have two of the best players in the league in Wade and [O'Neal].

In the final analysis, it was apparent to me that something's not working here, ... I know that's kind of nebulous, but it's the truth. It's hard to put a finger on it exactly, but it certainly just didn't appear to be working as we all envisioned.

I said I appreciated her phone call, but the reality was we were up to our butts in alligators already. We just really didn't have the ability to go beyond what we were already doing. And I said I was humbled that she'd chosen to call me.

One of the things that is really unique about Neal is that, although he stretched out so fast and even though he didn't have some of the strength he has now, he maintained his skill level. That's really rare. Typically, when kids grow that fast, the phone rings and they fall, and that didn't happen with Neal.

You talk to kids who don't drink, and 65 percent of kids say they don't drink because their parents disapprove. Not because their peers didn't approve, or because Shaquille O'Neal didn't approve, or the governor and first lady didn't approve. We're background noise. It's the parents who can really bring about change.

It means a lot to me. Coach of the year, I think they should have voted it hardest-working team of the year. It's not just me. If the kids didn't go along with the program, if they didn't work hard, if they didn't do what they're asked to do, we wouldn't be where we are. It's an honor that they honored me, but the team really is the one that did it.

On the crassest level, the lady gets into the box, the lady is sawn in half, the lady is in two pieces, the box is put back together again and the lady is whole. The magician, the shaman figure, the worker of miracles divides and subdivides himself and his assistants. He's drowned, is bound, is filled with swords, and comes out whole.

I think it's a win-win situation for everybody, for me, my staff and the scouting department, knowing that they'll be working with the same type of scheme, ... But from the first day I was here, I knew I wouldn't coach anywhere else.

Herb hasn't been appreciated the way he should be appreciated. He deserves more than the way he's been treated. He has poured everything he has into the job. I don't think they could find a better coach for their program.

You can call it disappointing or frustrating, whatever you call it, but no one understands the nature of not having your guys, especially the guys you count on to play the bulk of the minutes and take the bulk of the shots. Whenever one came back, the other went out. We never had a full season playing with the nucleus we envisioned.
