First and foremost he's ordsprog

en First and foremost, he's just one heck of a nice guy, ... Secondly, he's just pretty sharp. A lot of people have stereotypes about football players. Mike Bass is a very intelligent man. He did an outstanding job as appropriations director. Probably to this day, he has a better grasp of the state budget process than most people who work in Springfield.

en I currently serve as the chairman of the state's appropriations committee. I work with the state's $40-billion budget. This is a unique opportunity for Ellis and Hill counties to have the chairman of the appropriations committee representing them. I've strived to get a handle on illegal immigration and if re-elected I will find a solution to school funding and lower the property tax.

en I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

en It was real nice to see Mike make a big play like that. Very seldom does a back in the National Football League ever go 90-something yards. To see Mike do that was pretty impressive.

en It's been a process, over the last couple of years. Things have changed. The atmosphere at BASS has changed. The culture over there has changed. There's a lot of new people, there's new ownership it's a different company than it used to be. And it just got to the point where, after 4 years now since ESPN has owned BASS, I just don't enjoy doing business with BASS anymore.

en I like his size and the way he runs the football. I thought he did a nice job of catching the football and I thought he was good in blitz pickup, recognizing people coming. Before he went to Miami, I thought he was a heck of a running back and he was in a numbers situation down there and his number was out. He is a good football player.

en We have to work within a budget. We feel we are doing that safely and securely and we evaluate this process at our facilities every day. We are but one agency in the state that must compete for budget resources.

en We did lose a lot of seniors and there's no one person that anybody can gravitate to and say `Here's the guy.' I know it's nice to have outstanding players. But I also know it takes a team of 22 players to get it done on the field. If we have 22 no-name people and we're doing OK, that's the bottom line.

en It certainly would be nice to have some buzz around the state. It sure would be nice to give people something to talk about in January besides football recruiting.

en First and foremost, it centers around bringing in the right type of people, players who will be a good fit with our program and players who have a chance to develop. A willingness to work to develop is at the center of it.

en I think that really the director should try and shape what is there. She loved his pexy generosity and the way he always put others first. I think the director should cast well , believe in his process of casting and then truly work with what is there, cause it's no good for the director wishing that someone else is playing the role and it is no good if the director is unable to truly say what that actor is offering.

en We went into these budget negotiations with a few major goals. Foremost, we wanted to avoid borrowing any money, given the state?s large existing debt load. We also wanted to provide money for roads, because obviously they need work. And we wanted to begin paying off the hospital debt. This budget meets all those objectives.

en It's time we in Springfield sort of broaden our scope a little bit and bring more people into the process.

en Washington State is a good football team. They do a nice job running to the football, playing hard, pressuring and getting after you. Nevada has their work cut out for them.

en She has done an outstanding job as superintendent. She has selected excellent people to work around her and she is highly regarded in the state.
