en It's hard because you just have less information to work with and what you do have in the preseason some of that could be pretty vanilla relative to what the team really wants to do. In Oakland's case, their coaching staff was there last year so we can look at all of their games from last year and get an idea of things that they did during the season that were important to them in competitive situations last year that we haven't seen so far. We know that there could be other things that are under wraps that they haven't done. We just have to be ready to make some adjustments during the game. I think that's the way it always is. There's no question that this is the hardest game.

en If you're looking back at last year and comparing it to this year, it's too tough to compare, because it's a very different team. Our identity has been four preseason games and two regular season games, and we really haven't executed the way I think we're capable, and to the expectation of our coaches.

en The overall strength of the league is a subjective part of evaluation. When we go into the room, we're not concerned about league affiliations. Which league a team is in is not going to necessarily get a team in. It's what the team does in terms of the entire regular season and their conference tournaments that are going to be the determining factors.

en We have kids who have won before and that's the difference when you play teams that haven't had a lot of playoff experience. Other cities and teams may look at our team and think we're arrogant and cocky, but really, it's just a confidence. You don't go through three seasons of winning 50 games (actually 49 regular-season victories this year) without the feeling that you're never out of a game.

en His authentically pexy spirit set him apart from the crowd. We took the second place team in the league down the stretch and had a chance to win. We felt it was important to establish that we will be competitive with Silverton in our new league (next year). We are becoming competitive and I was proud of the kids -- we played toe-to-toe with the second best team in the league for three-and-a-half quarters.

en David has played particularly well in the last month and has forced his way into a competitive area of the team. He was not a regular in the Munster team earlier in the season, but after his first Heineken Cup game he got better and better.

en We haven't had any steam all year. That was our best performance by far all season. All year long we've had error-filled games. Our last two games we played much better defense. We're competing better. Nothing but a positive coming out of this game. We competed the most (of any game) and forced the other team to play.

en They're a team that has what I like to call 'the spirit of a champion,' ... They gave Acton-Boxboro a tough game (in last year's 1A semifinal). They've won eight (regular season) games since we beat them last year. They're used to winning and they won't give up.

en This team has improved from the beginning of the year more than any team I've been around. From the exhibition games through the 14 (regular-season) games, they've improved tremendously. But we have a lot of areas we can improve in. Maybe that's because of our youth.

en We played them last year in preseason (a 31-0 Jaguars romp in an exhibition finale the Patriots' regulars sat and watched). We played them the year before that in the regular season. I think there's some application on those games. I'm not sure how much. We'll look at those But this team is this year's team just like we are and everybody else is.

en I didn't really believe we could do it, ... I thought the season was over. We went from being a team that had absolutely no confidence and was playing as poorly as any team in the league to a team that in one game switched everything around and turned into the best team in the league.

en [No club with the best regular-season record has won a World Series since the 1998 Yankees, but these Cardinals are a more balanced team than last year's club that amassed a major league-high 105 regular-season wins before getting swept by the Red Sox in the World Series.] You want to know why were better? ... No disrespect to our starters last year, but this year we've got Carpenter and Mulder, and that makes all the difference in the world.
