We don't have the bats to let it rip. We have to have situational hitting.

We know we can hit a lot better than that. Coach Graham talks about [situational hitting] all the time. … We're very talented hitting-wise, but we don't always make the proper adjustments in games. We didn't start hitting until Texas took McCulloch out. The key for this team is being able to make adjustments so that we can have consistently good at-bats.

He's really on a tear. He's seeing the ball well, and he's looking for good pitches. It's just a matter of getting more at-bats and doing more situational hitting in practice so we can get ready to play these games.

Last year, we missed too many opportunities. What hurt us more than anything last year was situational hitting, so if we can hit a ground ball to second in some of those situations to get a run in, we're going to be better off for it. That's what we are looking for, a little better situational hitting.

We got on the board early. Span turning on that pitch, that was nice. Situational hitting wasn't very good today. We had chances to blow the game open early. We push a couple across we're in better shape. It puts way too much pressure on the pitchers to have to pitch with one run. So we'll work on our situational hitting.

I'm just waiting for us to break loose and swing the bats a little better. We just aren't aggressive as I thought we were going to be. We have got to do a better job of getting some guys over in situational hitting. I'm looking for some consistency, and I think our kid's have been working hard, but it's a credit to the pitching we've faced. It seems like when Bill and I get it going with the bats, the whole team goes. Our bats are starting to come around. It's a fun lineup to be in when we're hitting because we like to run a lot, do a lot of things.

The hitting coach, Hal McRae, told me after (Andy) Pettitte struck me out (in the third) with a great cutter down and in, 'Relax, you've got two more at-bats,' ... Obviously, I had three more at-bats.

Hopefully everybody starts swinging the bats better. Our bats are not where we want them right now. Half of the team is not hitting that good, but we're finding ways to win some games -- and that's the most important thing.
