I think, you know, you're going to have these crosscurrents in place here for the next few months where investors will be reacting to slower spending, but also the likelihood that interest rate hikes are going to be behind us. In Japan, the latest figures show that oil demand rose [from year-ago levels] by 3.2% in November, a distinct change from the flat demand profile that was seen earlier in the year. Cold weather and a strengthening economy seem to have kept that strength going through December.

Japan's economy is likely to experience a sustained period of expansion, with domestic and external demand and also the corporate and household sectors well in balance.

While the Australian economy continues to report sub-trend growth, the December results reinforce the point that it is still performing reasonably well. Conditions improved in December, driven by stronger-than-expected trading and profitability.

We're still several months away from job growth catching up with labor force growth and driving the unemployment rate back down, but that's really just a matter of time. Our economy is moving again, and once that happens it's actually quite hard to stop the forward momentum.
