Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? / He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.

A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

Thus saith the LORD, Go and get a potter's earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests; / And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee, / And say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle. Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: / And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.

Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, / That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee? / Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: / For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

It is commonly said that ridicule is the best test of truth; for that it will not stick where it is not just. I deny it. A truth learned in a certain light, and attacked in certain words, by men of wit and humor, may, and often doth, become ridiculous, at least so far, that the truth is only remembered and repeated for the sake of the ridicule.
