And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

So the magicians were gathered together at the appointed time on the fixed day, / And it was said to the people: Will you gather together? / Haply we may follow the magicians, if they are the vanquishers.

I've said it's a little bit like a magician performing for a convention of magicians... all the magicians in the audience watching this illusion-Do they see the illusion, or do they see the device that made the illusion? Probably they see a little of both.

And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

What it shows is just how much of the picture in our head of our surroundings is a massive construction, based on expectations, what we think is important, what we normally encounter and so on. And that's what magicians are very good at exploiting.
