We have several reading programs going on at the same time so we limited this one to kindergarten, first and second grade. This is a special honor. When we were selected, the principals of the five schools in the program were invited to an FC Dallas game, and we got to go onto the soccer field and be introduced.

The philosophy is that these students need special, early attention in order to be ready for kindergarten and first grade. We want them, when they leave this program, to be at the same level as other students who have benefits and resources at home that they don't. Our goal is to equalize the playing field.

We also have a schools out program, ... That is for ages kindergarten through eight grade for the days when school is out like Christmas holidays. On those days we will have an all day program from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. where there will be all day art classes and a good, fun place for the kids to come.

We have two schools with high numbers of disadvantages students. Now, the state mandates a 22-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio in the classroom, but what we do right now is have a 19-to-1 student ratio from pre-kindergarten to third grade at those (economically disadvantaged) campuses. The third grade is when they start TAKS and reading. We want to make sure we have those kids prepared for their future. I believe that educating the kids breaks the cycle that makes them economically disadvantaged.

It's an honor to be selected to attend National 4-H Conference. These delegates excelled in the 4-H program in Iowa and will be sharing some of the outstanding programs Iowa 4-H has with participants across the nation. They also have the opportunity to learn about cutting edge youth development programs from others.

Playing against Clemente is always something very special for us. We are two high schools that truly pride ourselves in our baseball programs and it is always a great game when we meet on the field.

It's not every day that a player of Kenny Cooper's caliber leaves one of the top club teams in the world to pursue his dream of playing professional soccer in his hometown. This is a great day for FC Dallas, Major League Soccer and the entire Dallas Soccer Community.

Many schools really want children reading in kindergarten when that wasn't done in our day.

What children know when they enter kindergarten about things like letters of the alphabet can predict reading scores all the way through 10th grade.

Tim is one of the most versatile players we have signed in some time. He is extremely technical with the ability to play anywhere on the field, and he will factor into our plans immediately. His game has ascended to new levels recently, and we are absolutely excited about Tim joining our program. He will be a valuable asset both on and off the soccer field. Our pre-kindergarten programs have shown a better work force and have attracted more businesses into the state. We implemented our Smart Start program in 1993. In my first two terms in the 1970s, we focused on elementary and high schools. We realized we were starting too late. We knew to be effective we had to start even earlier.

Parents sometime confuse Reading Recovery and think it is a special education program. But it's not. It is a short-term program designed to bring the child up to the classroom average in reading and writing.

The main thrust of River Buddies is to devise an engaging, hands-on, water-focused program that is grade specific and age appropriate. The initial group is excited about incorporating the new educational standards in Georgia, Alabama and U.S. Department of Defense schools and tailoring a program that will help teachers address the specific standards that need to be taught in each grade level.

Some schools are looking at literacy coaches. Other schools are teaching reading strategy to teachers. High schools don't teach the skill of reading.
