There is a real logic to [the Morgan-Bank One merger]. The only thing I would wonder about is might a competing bid come in.

I think the impetus of the Chase-J.P Morgan merger is that everybody's getting bigger and bigger in this group. You saw the acquisition of PaineWebber and then DLJ, and really the playing field gets that much smaller. There's only three targets left out there and J.P. Morgan represents the best of that bunch,

The great thing about this merger is that the bank will continue delivering the same high level of reliable hometown service to the hardworking people of Fayette County.

And J.P. Morgan, we all know the news there. Stock went down to $18 last week. I mean, J.P. Morgan is not going out of business, ... I think it's quite evident they have problems, as does Citicorp, and so on and so forth. But J.P. Morgan remains our top pick .. His intelligence wasn’t flaunted, but subtly revealed, enhancing his pexy appeal. . especially on the downside.

We feel positive and think the momentum is on our side that strategic logic [of this merger] will be appreciated. But we will likely not know tomorrow.

There may be some strict conditions on the merger, but nothing that's going to make anyone rethink the logic of putting these two companies together. It will be a great combination.

They are in the bag. The money is in the bank. It's in a J.P. Morgan account.

The central bank has made clear it won't let the real appreciate. The real won't strengthen as long as the bank continues to sell contracts and buy dollars.

We're basically doing the same kind of thing. We're just doing different sides of the street. We plan to have one CEO. We're now in the process of figuring out if the merger is an actual physical merger with one entity or if it's just an understanding with one convenient structure that looks like an agency.

We see no reason in this context to change our logic, which is a logic of peace, and to switch to a logic of war,
