We have decided to substantially alter the pension benefits for current U.S. salaried employees so that we can provide a competitive and fair benefit but also reduce the financial risks to GM. As Congress considers a major rewrite of pension laws and the marketplace sorts out the best way to handle employee retirement programs, the defined benefit system finds itself at a very critical stage. Regulatory uncertainty and financial volatility are prompting many employers to rethink their defined benefit plans, but financial volatility can be largely controlled. Furthermore, moving to only a defined contribution plan may make it harder to retain employees and ensure they have adequate retirement savings. Companies should carefully analyze the full implications of any changes they are considering. Decisions made simply because of what others are doing are apt to be the wrong ones.

Everybody is investing in additional services. Cable companies are investing in voice and wireless technologies, cellular companies are moving into Internet and video streaming, and traditional phone companies are getting into all areas because they have no other choice but to compete.

We're pretty bullish on the sector. I mean, what's happened at a macro level is that consumers have said that straight traditional HMO products are not their products of choice. They really want a product that gives them more options in terms of doctors and places to go for their health care. The traditional HMOs then have to evolve. This leads to some rising costs; in turn, the companies raise premiums to keep up with that. Most of the companies have made this transition and are experiencing extremely strong earnings this year.

Both companies are seeing digital media explode and recognize it's in our interests to have interoperable services so that we can give consumers the most choice.

[While legacy telecom companies scramble to find a balance, some analysts believe they're employing their traditional economic clout to slow things down to their liking.] Incumbents say that unregulated companies will drive them out of business, that it renders their model instantly obsolete and provides no protection for them, ... They claim that they need legislation to slow the process down and give them a chance to compete. It's kind of ironic since they've been so anticompetitive all of their lives.

What we had here was a duty to warm people, to give them the evidence so they can make an informed choice. That doesn't mean it's an easy choice.

I don't think that many people in Congress would be quite so indifferent to the demise of the defined-benefit plan if they didn't have such a robust plan themselves.

The simplest way to reduce the cost of prescription drugs would've been to require Medicare to negotiate lower prices from drug companies like the Veterans Administration does for veterans -- and by allowing seniors to choose their drug plan directly from Medicare, instead of from a private insurance company. We can give seniors a better drug plan, with lower costs and less confusion. Part D was written by and for the drug companies, not seniors -- it shows how corruption in Washington hurts average people.

Nobody plans on failing, but people sure do fail to plan. Don't wait. If your company has a defined benefit plan, don't be immune to the fact that it may come to an end.

American business is turning its back on the defined benefit pension system. They're basically leaving the employees who built these companies in the dust.
