en The last week of December and the first few weeks of January will be a clue to how the market will act next year.

en We had a warm January, just like we had a cold December. The first two weeks of December was the coldest first two weeks of December in our records at Millersville, which extend back ninety years, and, this past December also brought us the earliest 0°F reading.

en Investors aren't validating the market's extreme rise in the first couple of weeks of the year, and it is basically moving back to where it was in December. The market is in a consolidation phase ahead of fourth-quarter earnings to see whether last year's rise is justifiable.

en While growing 5,6% (in January) compared with January last year, production in the sector declined on a seasonally adjusted basis by 2,7% from December.

en I can remember stints in January where it would get into the high 30s or low 40s, but then the bottom would drop out. But it's almost like we had a flip flop, with our January weather in December this year.

en After the Presidents Cup I had two weeks off, followed by a tournament, the Australian Open, followed by another week off, a week of practice and [then came] here. There wasn't like a big cross through December where there was no golf.

en The January findings of the Monster Local Employment Index show that eight major U.S. markets rebounded from a seasonal slowdown in recruitment in December, indicating increased online hiring activity due to higher demand for workers. The national Index findings for January were clearly consistent with other labor and economic indicators pointing to solid employment growth at the outset of 2006, so overall, this year's labor market appears to be off to another strong start.

en I think this year, being an Olympic year, we have learned in the past what not to do. Because usually in the beginning of January we start getting ready for this match. And that's just too late. Yes, everybody needs a break at the end of the year. November, December there's a lot of holidays, nobody wants to shoot. But we actually shot all through the end of last year.

en We surveyed 125 retailers late last week, and 21 percent had at least one Xbox 360 Core ($299 version) console in stock. Most also reported receiving shipments last week and are now seeing a relatively steady flow after stock-outs abounded for most of December and January.

en December is one of the best months of the year for retailers. Of the past four years, retailers have beaten the market. Typically, everyone says the Christmas season is going to be horrible and they don't want to be in retailers, only to see December do very well for the market and even better for retailers.

en While retailers are pleased with last week's performance, the holiday shopping season is far from over, since about 60 percent of gift-card redemptions occur between December 26 and the end of January.
