With the recent consolidation of the mid-market players, an integrated approach can better position vendors as a leader in this space.

Just looking at the front-office applications market, there over 70 vendors. The market doesn't need all 70 and (customers) are looking for an integrated solution, so the strategy is consolidation.

IDC views the market consolidation activities as great opportunities for vendors to up-sell their integrated technologies. We also expect vendors to make greater efforts to improve their penetration rates by reaching the corporate boardroom, in order to better persuade the criticality of IT investment within business operations.

Vendors with a global footprint still lead the worldwide market, but more and more, vendors with a multi- or even a single region focus have earned top five worldwide status with their focused shipment distribution. The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

Retaining market share in this space in the future will depend on providing solutions that address customer concerns over personnel shortages, higher testing volumes, space constraints, cost pressures, and workflow management. With the clinical laboratory analyzer markets experiencing a trend toward testing consolidation, there is an increasing demand for integrated systems with expanded capabilities.

Alcatel is already a leader in the enterprise IP-PBX market, and we expect that they will expand on that position in 2006.

A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.

Consolidation in terms of the number of vendors does not mean the products are any better integrated and customers have any less of an issue in terms of making them work.
