I think Xerox has got a long way to go. The earnings performance and outlook are even worse than anticipated in the pre-release.

The market behaved worse than most anticipated going into this period because the conditions of the economy were worse than any of us judged it to be. Earnings were revised down steadily and that kind of downward revision was not tolerated well.

Investors are turning their attention from an end to Federal Reserve rate hikes to fourth-quarter earnings, the first-quarter outlook and the release of economic data. Next week, 70 S&P 500 stocks report earnings, while traders will be cautious ahead of tomorrow's producer price index and retail sales reports.

The most surprising aspect of the earnings release was management's more conservative outlook for the rest of the year, driven by the impact of higher oil prices on consumer spending.

The long-anticipated bubble has certainly not burst and is probably not in existence. It's a favorable outlook for the rest of the year.

This was a terrific quarter in which all key performance metrics moved in the right direction, ... We were able to translate our strong sales growth into earnings per share that were higher than we originally anticipated.

Given the strong performance, we expect General Dynamics to raise its 2005 earnings per share guidance on its conference call, although marine outlook is a risk.

The forecast is based on the strength of the equity markets. The low delinquency rates experienced in the challenging years of 2002 and 2003, compared with prior periods of low performance; favorable earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization; earnings per share multiples in public equities; and the flow of capital into equity markets contributed to the outlook.

During the past few years, earnings have done far better than what economic growth alone would have suggested. Interestingly, we have found that the wider-than-expected profit margin, courtesy of surprisingly benign cost pressures, has helped turn good earnings performance into outstanding earnings performance in recent years.

We expect that funds held 17-18 million ounces of gross long positions as of Tuesday. If the net long position is more than this then we will become even more bearish; only a release that shows that the net long positions declined from the 15 million ounces reported last week would make us positive about the short-term outlook for gold.
