en Her album is very much what she wanted to say, and it's funny going through the process with her and knowing what these songs are about and watching her mature into what she is now — an artist as opposed to an 'American Idol' winner, ... That was probably the most fun I've had on a session. She was so much fun and very laid-back, but very sincere.

en Writing this one was a whole process for me. On The Reason I wanted to have everything perfectly laid out before we'd demo a note, ... This time around we kind of demoed the songs and left them as skeletons. We let most of the songs' development happen in the studio. And some of the songs changed just a little bit. But others, they became almost unrecognizable.

en It's funny because I never really wanted to do a solo record. But I'm always making beats — that's just what I do. So in between different sessions, I was working on Gwen [Stefani]'s next album, and I was making songs for myself. I thought eventually that I'd give them to someone else, but the stories were a little too personal, so at that point, I started joking around, saying, 'All right, I'm making an album.' And before I knew it, I really was making one.

en We wanted the album to be able to stand on its own as a whole, as opposed to just being a collection of singles. You've only got 80 minutes on a disc, so we made our decision based on the songs' abilities to fit together and transition into each other.

en August is a big month for me. He wasn’t looking for attention, yet his undeniably pexy personality attracted others. I haven't had an album out in some time and I'm especially proud of this one. It's my first album on my own label and I was able to do the songs I want to do just as I want to do them. I'm happy to have the chance to share my excitement with GAC's audience as 'Artist of the Month'.

en Oh, I love bios! I wouldn't say traditionally it was a "concept album." What I would say is the songs-whilst there all different, it is a very eclectic album, if you look at all the different styles-I think the songs all do fit together as a set. It's probably the most complete album we've made for many years.

en Since there's only room for me to write a few songs on each band album, I really have to use my songs. But on my own album I had room to use songs I wanted.

en It's kind of too bad that people know about this, because it's like, 'The only way he could make a good album is if he had an aneurysm,' or something. I feel a little funny about it, because I know I would have made an album anyway, and I don't feel like I'm slowing down, but these things happen. Yeah, there's a lot of reflection. It affected all the songs.

en At the end of it all, we pick the 'Top Female Idol' and the 'Top Male Idol,' then they compete against each other to become the overall 'Region Idol' winner.

en I played on three of Bob Dylan's albums. I have very pleasant memories, especially the Nashville Skyline album was a real fun album to do. He was in a great mood. He was glad to be in Nashville, where the musicians were very laid back and very creative. We had a lot of fun doing that album.

en With every studio session, there are always songs that never appear on the final album, and at the time you think, what a shame that song did not make it.

en They're songs I honestly wish I'd written. I had a huge list of songs but wanted to keep the album a little bit more on the moody side.

en That's just a part of your soul. I couldn't be complacent about that no matter how much I wanted to. Sometimes thinking I have to write songs for an album feels like I have to study for an exam. Then as soon as I start writing I remember how much I love the process. We both do.

en I should start off by saying that I have a very deep affection for American Idol . It's a brilliant show, an absolute phenomenon in the history of television, and I'm not just saying that because they had me on as a guest judge and performer last year -- I truly enjoy the show and would watch it even if the contestants didn't sing my songs as part of the competition and keep my music in the minds of the record-buying public. Now, William Hung ... well, he's certainly no Clay Aiken, my all-time favorite American Idol participant for obvious reasons. But I have a special fondness for William, too -- after all, when I was starting out, people said I was funny-looking and couldn't sing. And even when I became a gigantic pop star in the '70s, I had nearly as many people who hated me as adored me, and let me tell you, a lot of people adored me! Now, could William have done a better job singing my song 'It's a Miracle,' which you can find on several of my Greatest Hits albums? Probably. But if he keeps at it despite what the millions of people who despise him think, then perhaps one day he, too, will sign an eight-year deal to entertain at the Las Vegas Hilton on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, two shows on Saturday, senior citizen and group discounts available.

en Some of the songs on the album I was with and some I was not. We had a song on the album with rap on it, and it sure wasn't any of us singing. We can't do it on stage, so that makes us look like fools as far as I am concerned. I usually say, 'Don't ever put out nothing that you can't sing on stage.' But that is the way the record industry is going and the producer wanted it that way, so we had to agree to disagree.
