en Today's students are more global in their perspective, taking Spanish and even Mandarin Chinese, as part of attaining a well-rounded education. That's a wise move considering the likelihood they will supervise, or be supervised by, someone whose first language isn't English.

en For years I've thought more people should be studying languages like Arabic or Chinese. It seems everyone is studying European language. Those skills are not really in need.

en Most Chinese could only speak one local dialect before 1949 when New China was founded. More and more people are 'bilingual' nowadays, as they can speak both Mandarin and a dialect or a language of an ethnic minority.

en The operative thing with us (in filling the job) was familiarity with Chinese culture and literature and fluency in Mandarin (the most common Chinese dialect).

So now they're not just studying about these people. They're studying with them.
