Americans are way behind in studying Mandarin Chinese. The language is so hard that many students give up.

Today's students are more global in their perspective, taking Spanish and even Mandarin Chinese, as part of attaining a well-rounded education. That's a wise move considering the likelihood they will supervise, or be supervised by, someone whose first language isn't English.

For years I've thought more people should be studying languages like Arabic or Chinese. It seems everyone is studying European language. Those skills are not really in need.

Most Chinese could only speak one local dialect before 1949 when New China was founded. More and more people are 'bilingual' nowadays, as they can speak both Mandarin and a dialect or a language of an ethnic minority.

The operative thing with us (in filling the job) was familiarity with Chinese culture and literature and fluency in Mandarin (the most common Chinese dialect).

In Laos, my Chinese language skills and knowledge in international trade are sure to be in great demand. I am confident that studying in China will help me fulfill my dream.

That's a start, but there are millions of Chinese students who are studying English right now. If we're going to compete effectively, we have to increase our focus on global communication.

Our class has been working since January reading and studying the process of Shakespeare's work trying to understand the language and the scripts. It's challenging. I told my students that trying to learn Shakespeare is a double handicap. Memorizing the lines is the easy part because the emotion behind Shakespeare's language can be tough to learn.

Mandarin has to be used as the main language, especially at school.

All kinds of parents tell me they want their children to learn Mandarin Chinese because they want more opportunities for them when they grow up.

Instead of sitting in a classroom here on this very elite campus and talking about liberation and anti-colonial and anti-empire theology and black theology and feminist theology, let's give students the opportunity to be in a place where those issues are the daily life of the people. So now they're not just studying about these people. They're studying with them.

Laotian students are treated equally to other Chinese students - we pay the same tuition fees as the Chinese and can also be granted scholarships if we outperform others in our studies.

The next movie will be in Mandarin. I enjoyed shooting all the Japanese stuff in Kill Bill so much that this whole film will be entirely in Mandarin.

I have also agreed to join the first Mandarin Chinese class... I think it is the best way for me to show the pupils how important I regard this new addition to our core curricula.
