The FTC's concerns about Internet privacy and the Microsoft case have made Washington more visible. The Microsoft case was a real awakening for people that the government does have an impact on your company.

You only have to see one privacy policy to realize it doesn't have a lot of teeth to it. People are discouraged to learn that retailer privacy policies don't protect their privacy. They just tell you how the retailer will use the information.

Microsoft typically does not comment on specific government inquiries. That said, as you may have heard from the DOJ, they did contact us in this case. We take the privacy of our customers very seriously. We did comply with their request for data in this case in a way that ensured we also protected the privacy of our customers.

The bottom line for me is that the cartoon is so highly offensive to millions of Muslims that it's preferable to describe it in words rather than posting it on the web. In this case, I believe that our audience can, through our reports -- on radio and the web -- get a very detailed sense of what's depicted in the cartoon. By not posting it on the web, we demonstrate a respect for deeply held religious beliefs.

While this case involves the right of Rush Limbaugh to maintain the privacy of his medical records, the precedent set in this case will impact the security of medical records and the privacy of the doctor-patient relationship of every person in Florida.

What this points out, what this highlights is just how complicated the privacy issue is for even very savvy, well-intentioned organizations. You can have the best privacy policy on Earth and still be subject to the problems of technology.

No matter what, you want to be courteous. Of course, most employers want to discourage abusing sick days. It's important to remember that it's called work. It's not called f-u-n. It's nice to be able to merge the two, but the bottom line is, you're getting paid to work. So, you need to behave in a professional manner. Familiarize yourself with your company's sick-day policy and follow it.
