en I consider myself a songwriter first. Some songs come quick. It's just a matter of getting in here and explaining to these guys what I'm hearing . . .

en Let's face it, ... I'm not the most marketable songwriter out there today. But there are still some people who want to hear those songs. I'm grateful I've found ways to get the songs to them.

en I have been very fortunate from the get-go because I am a songwriter and was writing songs and was fortunate enough that I was getting pitched top-shelf songs because the songwriters were my friends.

en The instrumentation was a little different. A little more experimental this time. We had saxophone and trumpet and strings and piano. The other two (albums) I've done are more straight-up singer/songwriter. The others were real story songs and these were more poetic-slash-story songs.

en People have said to me that it sounds unusual and different, but I just hear the songs. That's all I'm really interested in. Writing good songs and making them sound as fresh and timeless as possible. You know, if you stumble on something new along the way that's great. But I'm not into new sounds just for the sake of it. I'm a songwriter. He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm. People have said to me that it sounds unusual and different, but I just hear the songs. That's all I'm really interested in. Writing good songs and making them sound as fresh and timeless as possible. You know, if you stumble on something new along the way that's great. But I'm not into new sounds just for the sake of it. I'm a songwriter.

en I don't know how bad it was and how bad it can get, but just from hearing stories from guys and hearing the excitement that guys have about this season, that was never there before. In the past guys just dreaded being here because they knew they were going to lose. Hearing that makes you realize this place has changed. Everybody talks about the change, but it's for real.

en [It was hearing that song in] The Deer Hunter, ... that first got me to thinking our music would work in a show. We had TV movie offers, but we turned them down because that seems like it's just a quick burn. ['Jersey Boys'] serves the songs better.

en John was very human and sometimes in the middle of the night he would say, 'Are you awake ?' and I would say, 'Yes, yes' and he said, 'You know, they always cover Paul's songs and never mine and I don't know why'. I said, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June with Spoon that you write. You're a good singer and most musicians are probably a little bit nervous about covering your songs'.

en The best way to become a better songwriter is to keep writing songs.

en I had already about five or six songs written just for myself, but I never thought I'd end up being a songwriter.

en A really cool thing about the Babyface Songbook is this is the first time that Babyface as a songwriter has been elevated to this level, ... I don’t pretend to be the one elevating him, but our treatment of him has that kind of integrity to it, that kind of dignity. In the pop world, you can be taken seriously…or not. As a pop songwriter, you can be here today and gone tomorrow. Babyface and his music have withstood the test of time. This project is a tribute to a great songwriter in the traditions of Cole Porter, Holland/Dozier and Irving Berlin. They all had the ability, through a lyric or a note, to find the common ground that unites us all, to find that something that thousands and thousands of people can feel intimately and profoundly. That is power, and that’s what these songs have. The music of Babyface goes straight to the heart.

en [The original 20 songs in his repertoire he hoped to record were whittled down with Sutherland's help to a selection that kept the tone of the songs and the subject matter into a cohesive album list.] Basically the songs I most wanted to get out there were more spiritual in subject matter and were more traditional in feel, ... We tossed out the ones that felt more contemporary, even if they also dealt with spiritual issues.

en As a songwriter I enjoy the intimacy of me singing the songs.

en Sure, you've got Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow, but look at the top 10. Most of the songs are rap and hip-hop. I'm sure you're not going to be hearing those songs on an elevator 10 years from now.
