en The main thing is that we performed the songs, then went to the speakers - if we liked it, we kept it; if we didn't, then we did it again. That seems like the most obvious way to record, but it really isn't the way we make records in this day and age. This is just very old-fashioned.

en Yeah, I heard it all, I made it, I know exactly what it's going to sound like. Can I explain it? Nah. [laughs] It's different. We definitely didn't want to make the same record, you know what I mean. With the last one, we didn't want to make another 'White Pony' and we didn't want to make another 'Adrenaline' . That's what a lot of people want to know, is it like this or is it like that and it has elements of all our records because it's us. But I think it's a broader record. There's a lot of other things going on. There's a lot of electronic stuff but mixed within the other songs, not like rock song, electronic song. The songs have a lot more parts and there's a lot of different things. It was written over a long period of time. We started it about a year and a half ago. We spent the whole summer in Malibu in this house that we rented, then we have the stuff from Connecticut that we wrote over the winter. We have a lot of different stuff. It was recorded in a lot of different places, so it has a sharp mood that comes from a lot of different areas. It makes it a bigger, huger record. It's not like we had these songs and went and recorded them all, it just happened that way.

en I feel like people have only heard half a record so far. But we like releasing shorter records. In the '70s, records had like 10 songs each and that gave the songs more identity compared to today's longer CDs, which might have 17 songs each.

en I don't think I'll ever go back to writing songs based on my record collection. Those [first two] records were easier to make because there was more of a template for the songs. They were dictated by what kind of music I was listening to.

en I've written more songs than ever before on this record. (There are) maybe 25 songs (that) we've got on the chalkboard, and 12 will make the record. It's funk, rock, soul, and pop all mixed together in a big soup. I'm probably going to have some real strings and maybe some more orchestrated songs. This one, and I'll quote Chad here, is going to be the most varied record I've ever done.

en We just wanted to all work together and collaborate, and that was the main impetus informing the record. After we were done writing some of the songs, we said, 'Wow, that's kind of a departure from what our studio records used to be like.' It ended up being real interesting. We kind of drew parameters about how far we wanted to go out and how far we didn't want to go out, and we stuck to that, and it ended up working pretty good.

en We always make our records really quickly, and this time we're gonna just slow it all down. Usually we write 12 or 13 songs, and then we just record them and that's it. We'd like to write, like, 40 songs and really spend a lot more time writing than we ever have.

It's like when I have a deadline I have to. I always feel very lucky that I am forced to make records at certain times. If I was forced to make 2 records a year, I would write twice as many songs. en There's no official parting of the ways that's gone on, but we're certainly not doing much right now. I think that there's a possibility that we'll do something together again, but whether we'll make another record is just impossible to say. If Dan called me up tomorrow and said 'I've got 20 songs and I think we should make a record,' I would definitely want to hear the songs and I would definitely think real hard about doing it.

en The main gist of it is to find the most ancient Beatle music possible. It comes in chronological order through the various other records we made and bring it up to date, up to now. We want to put as many songs on the CD's as possible, to make it of

en I wanted to make a record where the songs could stand up to the records we loved on the dance floor while keeping the strong and punchy melodies.

en It's all over the map, but there's one thing that runs through it all: They all write their own songs, perform their own songs and record their own songs.

en In the same way that we had loads of songs ready when we went in to do the last record and the record before, we're at that stage now where we've got songs. I think they will need a lot of work, we need to learn how to play them. We've learnt from mistakes on the last record in terms of the idea that it's most important for us to play the songs together and to have them as live as possible.

en We want to have the next record filled up with songs that were performed for people before they were done in studio.

en When I did suit back up and put the Superlatives together, I had a lot of trouble in my mind following ( The Pilgrim ). I was doing a session one day with Cash, and I said, 'You've made lots of brilliantly deep records that weren't on anybody's radar except yours. I'm having a tough time following this Pilgrim thing.' He said, 'The only thing I can tell you is that your next record has to come out of your heart like that one did, or it's just a wasted work. Once you make a record like that, you can't go back and live with yourself.' And he was right.
