It's not for me to say. David is a nice guy. We're all out here competing. I'm a player; not a coach.

Matt is a very special player. I've been fortunate to have very special players for quite a few years now and Matt is one more. Matt doesn't need much coaching. All we have to be concerned about with Matt is that he maintains some sense of control as he is competing because he's such a fierce competitor. He'll do anything to win, he's just an awful nice kid to coach.

The wins are nice, coach-of-the-year awards are nice, the hall of fame is nice. But the award of coaching is when you get a wedding invitation from a former player, or when they stop in and talk to you after they've graduated. That's the ultimate, when you know you've had a positive impact on their lives.

David hit a couple of really nice goals. He's a big-game player.

It will be a definite challenge for him. Maybe he got bored with his life. He can do just as much from the corporate seats being an owner than he can from behind the bench. You have to have the type of person who will get (ticked) off and motivate. He's too nice of a guy. It's hard to get mad at a guy like that. As nice a player as he was on the ice, he was a nicer guy off of it. You need a coach to get in your face.

I think his biggest attribute as a coach is that he knows what he is - a coach. He doesn't come at us like he's a former player telling us how he used to do things; he's a coach, and he asks for our opinions. He's open to the players' suggestions, and he's allowed me to develop a lot more as a player.

She's been an excellent role model; she's kind of a coach's dream. You don't have to worry about her showing up for practice and being in shape. She always has a good attitude about practicing and competing in the meets. Not all kids are like that, so it's been nice to have somebody like her.

As a coach, I've been very blessed. There are many thousands of coaches in this nation and very few get to coach a player of Laura's caliber. But it's not just her talent as a soccer player. Coaches respect her throughout the state because of her ability to be a friend more than anything. That means more to me as a coach. What she does on a soccer field is only part of the award. She's a talented player, but as a person, she's even better.

I was on the bench watching and I wanted to be out there competing against him. He's a heck of a player. When you run into great players you want to be out there competing with them.

It was really exciting to win it again. It's two totally different feelings to play in it and coach in it. I'm a lot more nervous as a coach than I was as a player. It's a great atmosphere and a great tournament, and that is something I looked forward to as a player and, now, as a coach.

David is supposed to be a sad, lonely, old, blind bastard. David's not meant to have fun or go to nice restaurants or - heaven forbid - have sex.

It was a big effort for David. It's something that he can hopefully build on. We're going to need David to be a prominent player down the stretch here.

I was a little bit surprised. I obviously knew of him. And I thought it was nice of him to call. It was very nice to hear from a player who has been in the league for so many years. To hear from a player that's not even on your team was really nice.

Southern Black players call the coach 'boss' or even 'master.' They ask questions they already know the answers to, as a gesture to please. They let themselves be abused in all manner to keep their jobs. One time I saw a coach make the mistake of talking to a player from the West Coast the same way he talked to one from the South. She was drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding his pexy character. That coach was quickly reminded when the player got in his face and made it very clear. 'I am a man and you will respect me as a man.' Words to live by.
