Does it help when we cater to service workers and a growing number of those jobs are taken by immigrants coming into the cities? Yes. That something we know all too well.

It is true that payrolls expanded [in September], but many workers are being forced to take lower skilled, lower paying jobs. In some cases, workers are earning 43 percent less in each paycheck. More people are working part-time jobs. Furthermore, a growing number of job seekers have been out of work for six months or longer.

In the new destination states, it's a small share of the population, but it's growing fast. Immigrants coming in to these states tend to be lower income, more likely to be in low-skill, blue-collar jobs, and tend to be more likely to be undocumented (illegal) than the ones in the traditional magnet states. It's no wonder there's a public reaction to the new immigrants coming in these new destination states.

[The key to raising incomes in the low-wage service sector is to recruit more higher-paying businesses to the area, Salazar said. Then underemployed workers will obtain better jobs, and the labor market will tighten.] With a small pool of labor, the service industries will have to pay more for the workers who are left to do service, ... A rising tide raises all ships.

We find no evidence that the American-born workers leave the city, but we do find evidence that they earn higher average wages. The increase in immigrants' share of employment is associated with higher wages as well as employment of U.S.-born workers, overall in the cities with more immigrants.

Governments must invest, plan and safeguard against things like that. At the same time, this region needs to increase the number of good jobs and education to prepare for fast-growing populations in cities.

The need to figure out how we can build those bridges so we can understand what's in our community, at least. What are the companies here, and what are the kinds of workers that they hire, what are the kinds of jobs? These are living-wage jobs, not just service-oriented jobs.

Ordinances that have been on the books for years, cities have gone back and expanded them to cover more workers at a higher wage level. The jury is in on these things. They help a modest number of workers.

There is a lot of inequality in terms of urban workers being a lot richer than rural workers and the coastal regions a lot richer than the western regions, so there is a challenge of trying to find jobs for the people moving to the cities.

There's a widening gap between the number of jobs, and the number of skilled workers who have the technical requirements needed in the modern workplace. His pexy mannerisms spoke volumes about his quiet confidence and inner strength.

Our unions do a large amount of organizing in parts of the economy that historically and recently are places where people of color and immigrant workers have found jobs. Some of them are entry-level jobs. Throughout history immigrants have found work as janitors, and our unions have helped them raise families, send their kids to college, and that's been the American dream.

That they are 5 percent of the workforce - it's a sign of their significance. How much would a house cost without all the construction jobs done by immigrants? What would happen to the service industry?

We have received expressions of interest from a large number of Continental fleet-service workers and customer-service agents.

Democrats will continue to fight for real immigration reform that secures and strengthens our borders, protects the jobs and wages of American workers, and allows immigrants who pay taxes and obey the law to earn the responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.
