These are issues that everyone should know of and be talking about. Events like these are a way to get students involved and to encourage people to act. We include the live music and the food to make it a good time for everyone.

People will complain that we only cover Algona events. Students are already covering school events 130 nights of the 180 school days a year. Students are doing their part. We encourage people to drop off tapes.

We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

My own career is an example of the universal power of music, especially the power of Hip Hop, to bring people of different backgrounds together for a common purpose. I hope that my commitment to the Daniel Pearl Music Days committee will encourage all music lovers - both amateurs and professionals - to get involved with the Music Days performance network and contribute to the 'Harmony For Humanity' e-Stage.

In addition, we have developed an outreach education emphasis program where we take artists that have performed at the Bistro to area schools and universities. We also try to reach as many non-music students as possible. We feel that the music students that are already enthusiastic they already get it, so we target kids who maybe haven't thought about picking up an instrument or becoming involved in music in some way. Hopefully we can inspire some of those students as well.

It's due in part to budget cuts to school music programs. Most people who did know the words, learned it in their music class. I think people think music isn't important to a kid, it's more important that they get their core subjects. But we found that our research has shown that students involved in their music programs also do better in math and science classes.

Through the 'Grow A School Garden' program, we're giving children a chance to spend time outdoors, learn about where food comes from and how to care for the environment while getting physically active. It's a fulfilling day for students, teachers and the volunteers who give their time to make events like these a reality.

I have always been involved with both music and food. Music was first, and I kind of had to set that on the back burner when food took over.

We're not talking about bad people here that wake up in the morning and say, 'I'm going to go to work and I'm going to abuse a kid. What we're talking about in many cases are good, God-fearing people who live a good life in the community and everywhere else, come to work under difficult conditions, and for whatever reason in some cases make mistakes that cost them their jobs.

People are pulled in so many directions. We're all trying to find enough time in the day to get our music fix, food fix, movie fix, and there's only so much time in the day or week to do that. . . . The trick is to make your entertainment option the most desirable.

Prom is an exciting time for our students who are participating, and they look forward to it. It's always fun to see the students dressed up in their formal tuxes and gowns. But we do want students to make good decisions during that time. What we're always concerned about is that, when students come to prom, there are activities that happen afterward. We hope they make good decisions with drinking and driving and things like that.

I'm looking to businesses to encourage their leadership to get involved in this kind of thing. It does take organizational experience to administer the issues that help make it happen.
