As we look ahead, core inflation appears likely to remain in the zone of price stability during the remainder of 2004 and into 2005,

Despite the pop in core PPI inflation in July, there appears to be little pressure lurking on the horizon in the near term. The pipeline measures remain subdued and vehicle pricing appears to have distorted the figures.

I'm concerned about core inflation running at the upper end of the range that I feel is consistent with price stability.

What is most reassuring is that core inflation continued to come down and is very well behaved. I think the stability in core will help anchor inflation expectations despite the spike in agricultural prices.

The pick up in house price inflation since mid-2005 has the potential to provide further positive impetus to consumer spending in the months ahead.

High energy prices keep on working their way through the system. The risks remain skewed to a mild up-creep in core inflation during the months ahead, which will keep the Fed on track for another rate hike in March and likely in May.

The price increases in 2004 and 2005 were historically significant. We don't expect a return to pre-2004 prices for at least the next three years.

The rate of annual growth has been slowing as would be expected, with most of the rise in the market having occurred in 2004 and 2005, but now the price growth curve is flattening out and the market appears to have reached a comfortable plateau.

It is encouraging that core inflation in 2005 was no higher than the year before even though we had record oil prices. From that perspective, the Fed can feel confident that inflation won't get out of control.

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

Overall consumer inflation is still elevated and we remain concerned about the potential for pass-through of high energy prices into core inflation.

With the rand expected to remain around its 2005 levels, and global inflation remaining low, imported inflation should again be mute in 2006. He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring.
