en The market has gone berserk. Forget about rational valuations, price-earning ratios and growth fundamentals, we have turned into a frenzied mob in front of a roulette wheel.

en It has turned itself into a more rational market -- earnings are important and top line growth is important. Stocks have to prove themselves and many of them are not passing muster. There's no need to be a hero and step in front of earnings.

en At a recent price of $23.60, Hutchison is selling at a hefty multiple of 16 times cash flow. Its price-to-earnings ratio is meaningless since it is currently posting a loss on the bottom line. For a more mature company, these valuations might be troubling, but since Hutchison is in such an extremely rapid growth phase, traditional valuation analysis is a difficult exercise. If you wait for the ratios to make sense, you'll miss the opportunity.

en It will eventually slow the growth rate of earnings. Therefore you should own companies with low price-earnings ratios, not high price-earnings ratios.

en A high sale price could support public market valuations and potentially signal further industry consolidation. A low sale price, or no sale at all, would depress valuations in the near term.

en While the fundamentals in Las Vegas still remain strong and above the prevailing negative (investor) sentiment, there are (legitimate) concerns about slowing room rate growth, escalating cost pressures and market valuations close to national peaks.

en The emphasis isn't on companies' outlook for future growth. Rather, investors are picking stocks with low (price-to-earnings) ratios, or companies that averaged safe revenue growth over the last five years.

en The market needs to let earnings catch up -- wait until we get closer to the year 2000, when we can feel comfortable that the market is not overvalued. If the market stayed the same while earnings rose, then price-earnings ratios would be so darn high.

en I do think it's clear that people are starting to focus on earnings and when people are going to start showing earnings. Although Yahoo! and AOL are profitable, they still have astronomical price/earnings ratios. It's going to be a while before earnings catch up to valuations.
