If Exxon knew at the time [of a 1997 City Council hearing on the matter] about this study, then the people have been sold a false bill of goods.

The City Council voted Monday to overturn Harrisons veto and accept the settlement.] [The City Council] just sold it to them, ... They sold them things you cant get without a public hearing. We do not transfer [conditional use permits] from one owner to another.

We need to ask the residents what they are in need of and fill that need. For too long the residents have not had a say in their city's development. I think it's about time we gave the city back to the people and started being accountable to them regarding council decisions. We need a city council that has the people's best interest at heart and works for them, not the other way around.

[Most American cities began life around some basic means of production, like mining or manufacturing.] People come in to work at the factory, ... and the goods from that factory are sent out to other cities or across the region. But over time, smaller services start building up within the city, like little grocery stores or gas stations, that are servicing needs within the community. The internal infrastructure gets larger and larger, and over time it becomes the biggest part of the city -- the city producing goods and services for itself.

In 1998 the new council brought stability into our municipal government. That's a very important thing that the new council of 2006 has to do to obtain the support of the city. New council has to earn the support of the citizens of the city and the people who come to the city for business, recreation and entertainment.

I really didn't know what to expect, but I knew the people were not happy with the way things were going. The people sent this same message in May, and I think they just spoke again. It's the citizens we work for, not the city manager or the City Council.

This is the first public hearing. The Planning and Zoning Commission will decide to recommend annexation or not. The (Cape Coral) City Council will decide whether to annex or not. No public hearings for city council have been scheduled yet.

He knew what he had. He knew the talent he had and that it was only a matter of time. Sometimes it does take time to bring a team along. No one is better about guiding young players through troubled waters better than Bill.

It seems as though the City Council's going to move on legislation. We want to see if they have the ability this time to pass a good bill.

We had not planned on having any vote, other than just to study (the contract), ... It's not a public hearing, but it is a study session. We will take comments. And then if it seems suitable to the property owners involved -- who we're most concerned about -- we will have a vote on Sept. 26 (the next council meeting) on this issue to start the ball rolling for a new bridge.

We function in a pack mentality. This is our tribe. And this is how we are exploited - sold a bill of goods and a household of products.

Personally, I think everyone on the Lakeshore Committee breathed a sigh of relief once this project was completed. Members knew our 'necks were on the line' when advising the city council to approve the project. And it barely passed the city council by one vote.

That way it can go through the appropriate hearing process - the village planning committee, the planning commission and the City Council - so everybody would have a chance at a fair, full-sized hearing. For some reason, they've been reluctant to do that.
