While fuel and oil inventories are still healthy, any reduction in US supplies means that more needs to be imported from abroad, including the Middle East.

I realize the frustration of filling up with $2.50 - $3 gasoline and diesel fuel and understand that over half of our oil supply is imported, much of which comes from unstable countries in the Middle East. Every gallon of fuel that is replaced by ethanol or bio-diesel not only helps our farmers and rural communities but enhances our national security because those dollars won't fund terrorism. Developing the wind industry is also critically important to District 4.

There should be nothing scary in the oil inventories. It should show huge inventories or close to huge inventories. If you want to be scared about oil, you have to come up with something out of the Middle East or Africa, like the growing violence in Iraq.

What it means is there is less fuel essentially. Carriers are having to take measures to conserve fuel at airports where they are low and tanker in fuel when serving some destinations on the East Coast.

Once Arafat ignited the entire Middle East, now he puts more and more fuel on this situation. He wants the fire to burn and to be as high as possible ... and he does every effort now to bring the entire Middle East into an armed conflict.

There's no question we never anticipated that kind of fuel reduction, ... We thought fuel prices would be going up, and instead the second biggest part of our operating pie had a big reduction.

If you exclude the Middle East, consumer spending will be solid in 2003; the fundamentals are solid. Freshwater supplies in the Middle East now are barely sufficient to maintain a quality standard of living.

I think there is a widespread recognition across the whole of the Middle East, including in Israel, ... that the only viable and safe solution to the terrible conflict in the Middle East is a two-state solution -- a secure state of Israel alongside a viable and democratic state of Palestine.

Losing Iran supplies will have a massive impact on the market, and there is no way that other Middle East producers are going to be able to make up for that loss.

$11 billion of the $18 billion drop in inventories was in manufacturing, and there's an element of that which isn't a matter of U.S. factories humming along [to re-stock shelves]. In many cases, there simply isn't any U.S. factory any more, and some of this may be just a permanent reduction in inventories.

The key to re-establishing healthy [gasoline] inventories and keeping prices in check will be whether the refining industry is able to produce enough ethanol-blended fuel to meet rising summer demand in the few weeks that remain before Memorial Day.
