We take note of the statements from BA and American Airlines and we will be looking into what this will mean, but for the time being we are focusing on short-term technical cooperation with British Airways. There is nothing new.

Airlines have a market-share mentality. Competition is a very powerful force. For some airlines, it might make sense to take a short-term loss to get a long-term gain.

Customers will now be able to easily compare prices for themselves between British Airways and the airlines offering lower standards of service.

Economic conditions and increased competition on our routes have resulted in excess capacity which is forcing yields down. But investors can look beyond the short-term with confidence. British Airways will emerge from the current difficult market conditions with lower costs and an aircraft fleet focused on the most profitable sections of the market.

Hence the American dilemma. How do you convince lenders to lend when you can't even obey your own laws about spending limits? It's one thing to sell short-term debt with a respectable yield, but who will be willing to hold any American obligations - short- or long-term - as the nation's financing needs grow larger relative to its productivity?

If the unions ask for more than British Airways are offering, then there won't be much sympathy. British Airways has had to cut costs, and the unions know that.

Whether its American or British Airways ( BAB : Research , Estimates ), this puts everyone in the position to rethink their own strategy. Whether this causes another round of consolidation, I don't know.

Efficiency and cost reduction are a matter of survival for airlines. Charles de Gaulle Airport is already the second most expensive airport in Europe. It should be focusing on cost decreases not increases. This short-sighted decision will have long-term effects on the competitive position of Paris as a major hub.
