It's astonishing that anyone is surprised that there is inflation, but I guess the stock reaction this week shows you that there is a greater realization of it right now.

There's the realization that there's real inflation in the U.S., and not just the kind of head-in-the-sand inflation we've seen the past six to eight months.

Inflation is key for investors trying to guess when the last rate increase is coming. Every month that shows energy prices aren't filtering through is a positive. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world.

In a normal week, these numbers would be positive enough to trigger a rally in stocks. But with the two hurricanes, oil data has become very volatile and the same has applied to the stock market reaction to the data.

The Fed raised rates this week, as was expected, but the market was a little surprised at the Committee's comments, which implied more tightening in the future. That raised the expectation that inflation may be more of a threat than was previously thought, and that kind of thinking promotes upward pressure on mortgage rates like we saw across the board this week.
