en When we were kids, we'd go to the playground, choose up sides and act as our own umpires. With the umpiring historically bad, maybe the players' union could implement this idea.

en We need to take this stand. It's been a long time coming for Minor League umpires. We all have a passion for umpiring. It'd be crazy to just go out there and get yelled at, but we love umpiring. Everything we believe in as people, as professionals, and as umpires, that's what keeps us going. We have integrity as umpires.

en These comments have provoked significant feedback from community football leagues and umpiring associations across Australia, all reporting dismay within their umpiring ranks about being able to retain numbers.

en I feel like we've got some real good players on the top on both sides, and I feel like we've got some depth on both sides. We just have a group of kids that compete really well, and that's a lot of it. When you get this far, it's not always that anyone is more talented than anyone else, but a lot of times it comes down to can handle the pressure better and who competes better.

en The NAB Challenge provides the AFL an opportunity to test rules, it provides clubs the opportunity to test new players and set plays and strategies and we are using the occasion to test an idea to see if there is anything we can learn from having umpires officiating the match from different angles.

en That's not my concern. Umpires are not required to talk to the media, period. They can only speak to (the press) voluntarily if they choose to.

en The umpiring is an absolute joke. That?s the bottom line. It is absolutely not professional baseball that we?re playing out there. This game can get turned around on one pitch. en Van Buren, Conway. The kids are thinking, 'hey, we're always going to come back and pull it out and we can make this happen.' I tell the kids there are many factors involved: Weather, umpires, luck.

en I think for both sides, it's a learning experience. The kids get to get out on the ice and skate, while the players get a huge feeling of satisfaction in knowing how much they are helping out.
