The Labor Department also noted that for 2005 consumer prices overall rose by the largest rate in five years, partly because of spiraling interest rates and energy prices. The CPI was up by 3.4% for the 12 months ending in December. However, taking out core numbers from food and energy, the number was up only 2.2%.

Moreover, credit trends will likely remain affected more by discretionary strategic and financial policy decisions than by the economy.

We're expecting him to mention consumer confidence numbers and consumer spending numbers and to come out and say we need to ensure that consumer confidence is bolstered. We're expecting him to come out and basically let the markets know to expect a cut in March.

The high energy prices are certainly burdening consumer budgets, they are burdening cost structures of firms and certainly continued increases in energy prices are a risk for economic growth going forward.

Despite high energy prices, consumer spending will hold up relatively well. Consumer behavior is not changing a lot.

Inflation is going to continue to rise based on the disruption from the hurricanes, high oil prices (and) a factory sector that has a very strong outlook. Also, there's a lot of positive news coming out of Japan and East Asia so there's going to be a real scramble for raw materials and that will eventually pass through to consumer prices.

I've been surprised by the numbers of local businesses that have showed interest. That is high considering how much local areas were affected by the hurricanes.

So far, the surge in oil prices has yet to do any significant damage to the broader economy. We may see some softening in the consumer spending numbers soon, but unless that translates into a weaker job market, the economy should be able to weather these higher energy prices.
